Working at Eastfield Health

Our Community

Ashburton is a busy, thriving provincial town in the successful agricultural region of Mid Canterbury. We are an easy 1 hour drive south of Christchurch and its International Airport, and perfectly positioned in the centre of the South Island.

Ashburton caters well for our active, sporting and adventurous community with many sports clubs and groups, the EA Networks Centre (featuring an indoor sports stadium, indoor swimming pool and fitness centre), Mt Hutt Ski Field, Lake Hood (for water sports), Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers (for fishing, rafting and jetboating) and biking, walking, hiking and tramping tracks all on our doorstep.

Life in Mid Canterbury

Ashburton, with a population of 33,250 (October 2015), lies in the middle of the Canterbury Plains, 86 kms south of Christchurch. The Ashburton District extends from the stunning Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean and from the Rakaia River to the Rangitata River, including the towns of Mt. Somers, Mayfield, Hinds, Rakaia and the alpine ski village, Methven/Mt. Hutt.

Irrigation and dairying have transformed the landscape and the township provides a major service centre for the local farming community, with a great range of shops, services and a wide array of excellent cafes and restaurants.

Hakatere/Ashburton experiences crisp clear winters and long hot summers, with plenty of down time to take in sporting facilities including EA Networks Stadium and indoor aquatic centre, multiple golf courses, a tennis centre , an international-standard hockey pitch, plus lake and river fishing. Water sports enthusiasts can take in Lake Hood, only a 10 minute drive from the CBD which provides yachting, swimming, rowing and water-skiing. For those who love the great outdoors Mid Canterbury and surrounding areas can provide breathtaking tramps, cycle tracks or family walking tracks.

Parents and caregivers have an excellent choice of large, small town or rural preschools and primary schools, with a choice of two co-educational state secondary schools within the District.

The Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre along with the Ashburton Trust Event Centre tick all the boxes where you can immerse yourself amongst performing arts and culture.
